The Subtle Mind Practice

March 8, 2010

I have done this exercise twice during the reading and once today with the CD. I was doing quite well until the CD made a loud rushing noise and had to stop in my tracks. I did well with this exercise and will still have to practice several times a week in order to calm my mind. Since I recently lost my job, my mind has been ceaselessly wandering from worry, to school, to worry, to life, to money, to self criticism and back to optimism for my future so, I am putting it all out there. It is a new week and I know that all I have learned in this class and my stress management class has tremendously helped me cope especially this last week.

To be clear and plain, I really liked this exercise and think it is a good practice and when I take the time to do it, it works very well for me. Both times I completed it, I felt more relaxed. I also felt the need for more since it is an intentional practice and takes a firm commitment. I would teach this to others who were truly open to learn it.

One word:

Intent

  1. Hi Jill,
I love how you close each post with one word, it is nice to have it summed up into something easily remembered if you are one to repeat mantra or meditate on one word, this would be the word to use because then it will bring back that thought you had that brought you to the one word in the first places, like a tidy little circle.
I am glad to hear that although there is much going on in your world right now, the loss of a job and school and money, etc...that you are able to stay positive and focus on the good things to come. That wil make all the difference! Good luck.

  2. Jill,
I love your honesty there is nothing easy about losing a job, take about security going right out the window. I think it is awesome that you are able to make it a point to practice these exercises on a daily basis, it sure gives you piece of mind, "i hope". Staying positive is a great attitude and rubs off on those around you too, best of luck this week.

  3. Jill, I can identify with you. Last fall I lost my job as a manager because we were on orders to move. My employer immediately replaced me even when my husband's orders were cancelled. We have worked hard to make ends meet and wonder where and when we would be next. We finally got across the country and managed to close on our house at the last minute but had a closing agent we could have strangled the whole way through the experience. I know that was not very loving, but she was a nightmare to work with. I've had how to balance school, getting back to work, moving cross country, taking care of my daughter and all the effects of changes on her, my husband, and the list goes on. I was having full out mental breakdowns not too long ago. We had a few rough moments moving across the country, but I think my skills are coming in handly now and helping me work through situations and quiet my mind in the process.

    Good luck to you.

  4. Jill, that is so amazing to see how when we listen to these cd's they train our mind to think of the beautiful things life brings us. We all need to practices these exercises on a daily basis. I know for me i would benefit greatly if i could remember to think positive feelings rather than negativ.

  5. Hi Jill,

Your thoughts are as positive as they can be... and they will get you far. Good things come in time. I am sorry to hear about your job but the best way to look at it is a blessing in disguise. I too found this weeks exercise very relaxing, to bad for the noises on it :(

    Good luck to you!

  6. My CD did the same thing and the noise distracted the whole relaxation technique but I did get the point how breathing connects with our mind and the whole body. Sorry to hear that you lost your job that is a horrible thing to go through. When I lost my job a few years ago I was devistated and thought that it must of happened for a reason. I went to a quick school for massage therapy and was blessed to get a job right of school and made double almost triple what I was making before. When one door closes another door opens so stay positive.
